Single Doors

A single door is the style most remodelers reach for first, and for good reason. It opens up the bathroom visually, reads as modern without trying too hard, and works in almost any alcove where the opening sits between 24 and 32 inches wide. You pick which side swings, pick the hardware, and you're done.

What a Single Door Actually Is

One piece of tempered glass on hinges. No sliders, no tracks, no second panel trying to line up against the first. The door either swings to the right or to the left, and the rest of the shower opening is tile or stone that your installer has already prepped.

This design suits a standard alcove shower where the curb and the two side walls define the opening, and the glass lives between them. It's the style that asks the least of your bathroom and gives the most back in terms of clean sightlines.

Who Should Pick This Style

If your shower opening is 32 inches or narrower, a single door is almost always the right call. It's also the better choice for bathrooms where a fixed panel would force you to step around it, or where a sliding door would feel bulky against the rest of the space. Smaller secondary baths and guest baths lean heavily this way.

Taller homeowners notice the difference too. A hinged door with a full 76 to 80-inch height clears headroom that a tub-style slider never does.

Glass, Hardware, and Finish Choices

Default glass is 3/8-inch tempered, which is the standard for residential single doors and already heavy enough to feel solid. You can upgrade to 1/2-inch if you want extra weight on the hinge and a more substantial close. We'd only recommend the upgrade on doors wider than 30 inches, where the extra thickness actually earns its cost.

Hardware comes in two flavors: U-channel mounted along the edge of the fixed glass, or clamps that bite directly onto the panel. U-channel is cleaner looking and the cheaper of the two. Clamps expose more of the glass edge and read as more frameless. Handles are either tubular or square, and the five available finishes are Black, Brushed Nickel, Chrome, Satin Brass, and Brushed Bronze. Brushed Nickel remains the safest bet; Black is rising fastest.

One optional upgrade worth mentioning is our glass protection coating. It doesn't make cleaning unnecessary, but it does mean you can go longer between cleanings without seeing water spots.

Measuring and Order Notes

Single doors need a minimum of 24 inches and a maximum of 32 inches of clear width. Anything wider and you're in door-and-panel territory, because a single hinged panel that wide becomes too heavy for a residential header to carry reliably.

Measure your opening at three heights — near the curb, at handle height, and near the ceiling — and use the smallest of the three numbers. Walls are rarely plumb, and that smallest measurement is the one your door has to clear.
